The first playable Prototype of RIDE YOUR MIND (RYM) is exhibited in the new game art exhibition “Global Games” at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany. This version is very special. It is specially designed for the requirements of a museum. The game is displayed and played only by the use of an Oculus Rift virtual reality HMD. Using the Emotiv EEG headset in a museum is to complicated because the setup can only be done by experienced users and can take up to 10 minutes. As autonomous art installation it is important that the game runs in a loop and is easy to use. Because of this Jens M. Stober decided to use prerecorded EEG data to provide the players in ZKM access to his mind. While riding his mind the player can experience three different data sets such as Jens M. Stober thinking of Love, Fear or even Bananas. The EEG data has direct influence to the level and gameplay design. This is the world premiere of RIDE YOUR MIND in this speical ZKM Edition. The full version of RYM with realtime EEG features will be presented “when it’s done” 😉
Finally – and with the help of the Emotiv and UNITY3D community – I found a way how to setup the transmission of brain signals between the Emotiv EEG headset and the UNITY3D game engine. The EEG headset collects the EEG signals triggered by the users brain. These EEG signals get displayed and converted by the emotiv Control Panel to control signals. Next the generated control signals get converted by Mind Your OSC to OSC signals. The UNITY3D game engine receives the OSC signals as a client, reads them and triggers specified game mechanics within the Neurogame Ride Your Mind (RYM). Thereby the gameplay gets procedural generated by the prior triggered game mechanic elements. After this finding I can now start to produce
game prototypes of RYM. The following figure explains the explained concept:
